The official commissioning of the Livingstone-Sesheke Road and the Katima Mulilo Bridge by the President of the Republic of Zambia, the President of the Republic of Namibia and the German Ambassador, Dr Erich Kristof, marked an important improvement of the national and international core road network.

The Livingstone-Sesheke Road and the Katima Mulilo Bridge together with the Trans-Caprivi Highway open up an access to the Atlantic Ocean, which saves 5 shipping days from Europe to Zambia as well as for the other countries of this region.

Germany has provided more than 32 million Euro for the two projects in Zambia. Another 35,64 million Euro for the 276 k of the Trans-Caprivi-Highway under the German development cooperation programme with Namibia, which given the pivotal role of an adequate and well maintained transport system for the development of all sections of the economy as well as access to basic services, has the transport sector as one of the main areas of support.

For both the bridge and the road the construction period had been 24 months. The two projects have been completed within contract time and cost.

These projects mark a major step towards regional integration, addressing the needs of millions of people and contributing to a prosperous future of the whole Southern African region.
